Quranic Verses Regarding Zakat
Zakat is mentioned alongside Salah in over 82 places in the Holy Quran.
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ
"And establish prayer and give Zakat and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا
"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase..."
مَّثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven spikes..."
Sahih Hadiths on Zakat & Virtues
The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Muadh (RA) when sending him to Yemen: "Tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat that is to be taken from their rich and given to their poor."
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth, and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect."
The 8 Legitimate Beneficiaries of Zakat
Allah has specifically decreed eight categories of recipients in the Quran:
