عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَرَأَ النَّبِيُّ (ﷺ) النَّجْمَ بِمَكَّةَ، فَسَجَدَ فِيهَا وَسَجَدَ مَنْ مَعَهُ غَيْرَ شَيْخِ، أَخَذَ كَفَّا مِنْ حَصى، أَوْ تُرَابٍ، فَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى جَبْهَتِهِ، وَقَالَ : يَكْفِينِي هَذَا، فَرَأَيْتُهُ بَعْدَ ذلِكَ قُتِلَ كَافِرًا .

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud

The Prophet (ﷺ) recited Surat An-Najm (No. 53) at Makka and prostrated while reciting it and those who were with him did the same except an old man who took a handful of small stones or earth and lifted it to his forehead and said, "This is sufficient for me." Later on, I saw him killed as a disbeliever. [2:173-O.B.]

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: «ص». لَيْسَتْ مِنْ عَزَائِم السُّجُودِ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ (ﷺ) يَسْجُدُ فيها .

Narrated Ibn 'Abbâs

The prostration of is not a compulsory one but I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) prostrating while reciting it. [2:175-O.B.]

باب: سُجُودِ المُسْلِمِينَ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَالْمُشْرِكُ نَجَسٌ لَيسَ لَهُ وُضُوء

17/3 Chapter: The prostration of Muslims along with Al-Mushrikûn [1] and a Mushrik is Najasun (impure) [2] and does not perform ablution;

باب: سُجُودِ المُسْلِمِينَ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَالْمُشْرِكُ نَجَسٌ لَيسَ لَهُ وُضُوء

[1] Al-Mushrikun: polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ) [2] Their impurity is spiritual and physical: Spiritual, because they don't believe in Allah's Oneness and in His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and physical, because they lack personal hygiene (filthy or Junuban) as regards urine, stools, and sexual discharges.

وحديثه رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ (ﷺ) سَجَدَ بِالنَّجْمِ، تَقَدَّمَ قريبًا من رواية ابن مسعود وزاد في هذه الرواية : وسجد معه المُسْلِمُونَ وَالمُشْرِكُونَ، وَالْجِنُّ وَالإِنْس .

Narrated Ibn 'Abbâs

The Prophet (ﷺ) prostrated while reciting Sûrah (No. 53) An-Najm. (See Hadith No. 569 narrated by Ibn Mas'ud) with an addition in this quotation: " And with him prostrated the Muslims, the Mushrikûn, the jinns, and the mankind. [2:177-0.B.]

عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ (ﷺ): وَالنَّجْمِ. فَلَمْ يَسْجُدُ فِيهَا .

Narrated Zaid bin Thâbit

I recited Sûrah (No. 53) An-Najm before the Prophet (ﷺ) yet he did not perform a prostration. [2:179-O.B.]
