4. The Book of Wudu (Ablution)

مختصر صحيح البخاري

باب: لَا تُقبَلُ صَلَاةٌ بِغَيْرِ طُهُورٍ

4/1 Chapter: No (prayer) is accepted without ablution (i.e. to remove the small Ḥadath [1] by ablution or the big Hadath [2] by taking a bath).

[1] Passing wind or urine or answering the call of nature. [2] Sexual discharge.

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قال : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (ﷺ): (لاَ تُقْبَلُ صَلَاةُ مَنْ أَحْدَثَ حَتَّى يَتَوَضَّأَ). قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ حَضْرَمَوْتَ : مَا الْحَدَثُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ؟ قَالَ : فَسَاءٌ أَوْ صُرَاطٌ .

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Salât (prayer) of a person who does Ḥadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted till he performs (repeats) the ablution." A person from Haḍramout asked Abu Huraira " What is Hadath?" Abu Huraira replied, Ḥadath means the passing of wind from the anus." [1:137-0.B.]

وَعَنْهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رسولَ اللَّهِ (ﷺ) يَقُولُ : (إِنَّ أُمَّتِي يُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ غُرَّا مُحَجَّلِينَ مِنْ آثَارِ الْوُضُوءِ، فَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يُطِيلَ غُرَّتَهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ).

Narrated Abu Huraira

I heard the Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called Al-Ghurr-ul-Muḥajjalûn from the traces of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance [1] should do so (i.e. by performing ablution in the most perfect manner). ' " [1:138-0.B.]

4/3 Chapter: One should not repeat ablution if in doubt unless and until he is convinced (that he has lost his ablution by having Ḥadath).

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بن يَزِيْدِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَّهُ شَكَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ : الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي يُخَيَّلُ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ يَجِدُ الشَّيْء فِي الصَّلاةِ؟ فَقَالَ : (لَا يَنْفَتِلْ - أَوْ : لا يَنْصَرِفْ - حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ صَوْنًا أَوْ يَجِدَ رِيحًا) .

Narrated Abdullah bin Yazîd Al-Ansari

He asked Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the (prayer). Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) replied: " He 11 should not leave his Salât (prayers) unless he hears sound or smells something." [1:139-O.B.]

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُما : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ (ﷺ) نَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ . صَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأُ وَرُبَّما قال : اصْطَجَعَ حتَّى نَفَخَ ثُمَّ قام فَصَلَّى.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbâs

The Prophet (ﷺ) slept till he snored then he offered (prayer) without performing ablution or probably said, laid till his breath sounds were heard, then he got up and (prayer). [1:140-O.B.]
