R.v.C, Bodley নামক ইংরেজ জীবন-চরিতকার তাঁর The Messenger নামক গ্রন্থে ইসলামের আবির্ভাবের সময় তল্কালীন পৃথিবীর সাধারণ পর্যালোচনা করতে গিয়ে সে সময়কার উল্লেখযোগ্য দেশ ও জাতিগোষ্ঠীর নিম্নোক্ত রূপ আলোচনা করেছেন।

• "The Arabs did not command any respect in the sixth century world. As a matter of fact, no one counted very much. It was a moribund period when the great empires of Eastern Europe and Western Asia had already been destroyed or were at the end of their imperial careers.

"It was a world still dazed by the eloquence of Greece, by the grandeur of Persia, by the majesty of Rome, with nothing yet to take their places, not even a religion,

"The Jews were wandering all over the world, with no central guidance. They were tolerated or persecuted according to circumstances. They had no country to call their own, and their future was as uncertain as it is today

"Outside the sphere of influence of Pope Gregory the Great, the Christians were propounding all kinds of complicated interpretations of their once simple creed and were busy cutting one another's throat in the process.

"In Persia, a last flicker of empire-building remained. Khusrau II was extending the frontiers of his domain. By inflicting defeat on Rome he had already occupied Cappadocia, Egypt and Syria. In 620 A.C. (after Christ), when Muhammad was about to emerge as a guide for humanity, he had sacked Jerusalem and stolen the Holy Cross and restored the might and grandeur of Darius I. It looked almost like a new lease of life for the splendour of the Middle East. Yet the Byzantine Romans still had a little of their old vitality. When Khusrau brought his army to the walls of Constantinople, they made a final effort to survive.

"Further away in the east, the march of events was leaving few landmarks. India still consisted of many unimportant sutty states which struggled mutually for political and military supremacy.

"The Chinese, as usual, were fighting among themselves. The Sui dynasty came into power to be replaced by the Tang which ruled for three centuries.

"In Japan, an Empress occupied the throne for the first time. Buddhism was beginning to take root and to influence Japanese ideas and ideals.

"Europe as gradually merging into the Frankish Empire, which would eventually comprise France, Northern Italy, most

of the countries east of the Rhine as far as the present Russo-Polish border. Clovis was dead and Dagobert, the last great Merovingian ruler, was soon to be crowned.

"Spain and England were unimportant petty States.

"Spain was under the control of Visigoths, who had lately been driven out of France which they had occupied as far in the north as Loire. They were persecuting the Jews, who would, consequently, do much to facilitate the Muslim invasion which was to follow a century later.

"The British Isles were divided into independent principalities. One hundred and fifty years had passed since the departure of the Romans, who had been replaced by an influx of Nordic people. England herself was made up of seven separate kingdoms."

“প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্য সত্ত্বেও ঈসায়ী ৬ষ্ঠ শতকে তখনকার বিশ্বে আরবদের কোন গুরুত্ব ছিল না। আসলে তখন কারুরই কোন গুরুত্ব ছিল না। এটা ছিল এক মরণোন্মুখ মুহুর্ত যখন পূর্ব য়ুরোপ ও পশ্চিম এশিয়ার দুই বিশাল সাম্রাজ্য ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত কিংবা মুমূর্ষ প্রায়। এ ছিল এমন এক জগত যা এখনও গ্রীসের বাকচাতুর্য, ইরানের শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব এবং রোমের জাকজমক ও দাপটে বিস্ময়াভিভূত ছিল এবং এমন কোন বিষয় বা বস্তু কিংবা এমন কোন ধর্মও ছিল না যা তাদের ভেতর কোন একটির স্থান দখল করতে পারত।

“য়াহূদীরা সারা পৃথিবীতেই মার খেয়ে ও গলা ধাক্কা খেয়ে ফিরছিল। তাদের কোন কেন্দ্রীয় নেতৃত্ব ছিল না। অবস্থা মাফিক তাদের বরদাশত করা হতো কিংবা নির্যাতন-নিপীড়ন করা হতো। কোন দেশই তাদের একান্তভাবে নিজেদের ছিল না এবং তাদের ভবিষ্যতও তেমনি অনিশ্চিত ছিল যেমনটি আজ।

“মহামতি পোপ গ্রেগরী (Gregory the Great)-র প্রভাব বহির্ভূত এলাকার খ্রিস্টানরা নিজেদের সহজ সরল ধর্মবিশ্বাসের সর্বপ্রকার জটিল অর্থ অন্বেষণ এবং এ নিয়ে একে অন্যের গলায় ছুরি চালাতে ব্যস্ত ছিল।

“ইরানে সামাজ্য নির্মাণের কেবল একটি আলোক-রশ্মি থেকে গিয়েছিল, দ্বিতীয় খসরূ তার সাম্রাজ্যের বিস্তৃতি সাধনে ও সীমা সম্প্রসারণে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন। তিনি রোম সাম্রাজ্যকে পর্যুদস্ত করে কাপাডোসিয়া, মিসর ও সিরিয়া দখল করেন। ৬২০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে (যখন মুহাম্মদ সা. নেতা হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করতে যাচ্ছিলেন) বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস ধ্বংস করে পবিত্র ক্রুশ কাষ্ঠ চুরি করে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন এবং সম্রাট ১ম দারিউসের শান-শওকত পুনঃপ্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন।

মনে হচ্ছিল যেন মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের শৌর্যবীর্য জীবনের এক নতুন কিস্তি পেয়েছে, কিন্তু কেবল এটাই ছিল না। বায়যানটাইন রোমকরা তখনও নিজেদের অতীত কর্মক্ষমতা হারিয়ে ফেলেনি। পারস্য সম্রাট খসরূ যখন তার সেনাবাহিনী কনস্টান্টিনোেপলের প্রাচীরের পাদদেশে এনে দাঁড় করান তখন তারা তাদের শেষ প্রয়াস চালায়।

“দূর প্রাচ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য বা রেখাপাত করার মত তেমন কিছু ঘটেনি। ভারতবর্ষ তখনও ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র ও গুরুত্বহীন কতকগুলো দেশীয় রাজ্যের সমষ্টি যারা। রাজনৈতিক ও সামরিক প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা ও একে অপরের ওপর প্রাধান্য প্রতিষ্ঠার সংগ্রামে লিপ্ত ছিল।

“চীনারা ছিল তাদের চিরাচরিত পারস্পরিক সংঘর্ষে লিপ্ত ! সুঈ বংশ ক্ষমতায় আসল এবং গেল এবং তাদের স্থান দখল করল তাঙ রাজ বংশ যারা তিন শতাব্দীকাল শাসন ক্ষমতায় অধিষ্ঠিত থাকে।

“জাপানে প্রথমবারের মত একজন মহিলা সিংহাসনে বসেন। বৌদ্ধ মতবাদ আসন গেড়ে বসতে শুরু করেছিল এবং জাপানী ধ্যান-ধারণা ও লক্ষ্যের ওপর প্রভাব ফেলে চলেছিল।

“স্পেন ও ইংল্যান্ড ছিল গুরুত্বহীন ক্ষুদ্র দেশ। স্পেন ভিসিগথদের শাসনাধীন ছিল যাদের কিছু কাল পূর্বেই ফ্রান্স থেকে, যার ওপর তারা loire পর্যন্ত দখল কায়েম করে রেখেছিল, বের করে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। তারা য়াহুদীদের ওপর জুলুম-নিপীড়ন চালাচ্ছিল যা এক শ' বছর পরের মুসলিম আক্রমণের রাস্তাকে সুগম করছিল।

“বৃটেন উপদ্বীপ ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র স্বাধীন রাজ্যে বিভক্ত ছিল। রোমকদের বিদায়ের দেড় শ’ বছর অতিক্রান্ত হবার পর নরডিক (Nordic) জাতি তাদের স্থান দখল করে। খোদ ইংল্যান্ড সাতটি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন রাজ্যের সমষ্টি ছিল।”১
